Bronco

One of the Ford Bronco’s most distinctive features is the ability to remove its doors and enjoy an even more open-air experience. The challenge, of course, is figuring out what to do with those doors once they’re off. A newly published Ford patent suggests the Bronco could eventually offer a clever solution by carrying them securely inside the vehicle itself.

Ford’s proposed integrated cargo-area door storage system would create dedicated mounting points behind the Bronco’s rear seat. Instead of leaving removable doors at home or finding another place to store them, owners could potentially secure them directly inside the cargo area and bring them along for the adventure.

The concept builds on another Ford patent that explores making Bronco doors easier to remove. That system would use specialized mounting bars and connections to hold the doors in place. Ford’s latest idea takes those same types of connections and integrates them into the Bronco’s cargo area, essentially giving each door its own secure storage location.

For off-road enthusiasts, the benefits are easy to imagine. You could head out with the doors installed, remove them when you reach the trail, and store them safely inside the Bronco. If the weather suddenly changes, temperatures drop, or you simply want the doors back on for the drive home, they’re still travelling with you.

That’s particularly appealing here in BC, where a day of exploring can bring rapidly changing weather and a wide variety of terrain. Being able to enjoy an open-air Bronco without having to commit to leaving the doors behind could make the removable-door experience considerably more practical.

As with any Ford patent, there’s no guarantee this system will ultimately reach production. Ford routinely patents new ideas to protect its intellectual property, and not every concept makes its way to a showroom. Still, built-in door storage feels like a particularly natural fit for the Bronco, combining one of its signature features with the kind of practical thinking that could make that feature even easier to enjoy.
